I came across an article concerning the ADA- Americans with Disability Act and the Obese. A group of large men and women are not just demanding for respect anymore, they want their condition recognized as a Qualifying Disability for purposes of ADA Protection and Workplace Pampering. Their argument is that their condition is Genetic and they want to be accomodated in the workplace and in public.

The ADA defines Disability as "a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of an individual." This is true for the Obese. However, unlike any other disabilities such as blindness, lost of a limb, mental retardation, etc .... the obese disability can be REVERSED. It can be corrected by simply stop consuming the 10,000+ calories per day. When the term genetics is thrown into the argument - it basically validate their lifestyle to engorge themselves without consequence. They hold no responsibility for their eating habit but demand the right to park in the handicap lane or do less physical work. And of course, at the point when their health is severly compromised, they immediately turn the blame onto the Fast Food Industry or the Buffet-Style Restaurants.

Yes, in my opinion food addiction is probably the most difficult and complex of addictions. It is destructive to your body and the result of obesity comes with a wide range of health concerns. But come-on, blaming the inability to stop over-eating as a biological inherited gene that one cannot control is ridiculous! History have shown that obesity was NEVER prevalent in any society or country due to their gene pool. It is now emerging and growing at phenonmenal rate to the point where our children are classified as obese.

We are in a Technological World where there is less physical labor and activity in any given day. I personally came from the generation where I had daily outdoor activites after school or even this, I had to get up out of my chair just to change the TV channel. Those days are long gone.

So, if your life is in danger due to this 'disability' - and you and everyone else know what the solution is to cure it, isn't it common sense to take control of your life and correct it immediately? It is NOT inferior nor weak to go and seek help; it is when you blame it on someone else and demand for restitution.
