One cannot disclaim the work history, credentials and experience of Legendary Reporter and Journalist Helen Thomas. She has over 57 years as a correspondent and White House Bureau Chief for United Press International (UPI). She has covered every President since JFK (in 1961). She broke through barriers for women reporters. Her lifetime achievements has earned her a front row seat in all Press Room Presidential Briefings. However, under GWB, she has been reassigned to the back of the room and very rare is called upon for questions. She recently left her post to be with Hearst Newspaper as a syndicated columnist.
Thomas has publicly expressed her negative opinions of Bush. She wrote several columns condeming the Administration: Bush is acting as an Imperial President , Bush legacy already Establish , and calls Bush the "Worst President in History" (and this was back in 2002).
During a Press Conference on March 21, 2006 - Bush directly selected Thomas to ask her question (for the first time in 3 years). She asked about the War in Iraq:
"I'd like to ask you, Mr. President, your decision to invade Iraq has caused the deaths of thousands of Americans and Iraqis, wounds of Americans and Iraqis for a lifetime. Every reason given, publicly at least, has turned out not to be true. My question is: Why did you really want to go to war? From the moment you stepped into the White House, from your Cabinet—your Cabinet officers, intelligence people, and so forth -- what was your real reason? You have said it wasn't oil—quest for oil, it hasn't been Israel, or anything else. What was it?"This was Bush's response to Helen's question:
