The driver is "suspected" in drug trafficking. Was the driver arrested? Nope. Ticketed for a traffic infraction? Nope. Have his money taken to be used by the town? Yep.
"Engel pulled over a Salt Lake City, Utah, resident whom he suspected of speeding on Interstate 80 near the town of Kimball.Ok...so the cop didn't like the driver's story?! Ok I don't buy that you just drive around with that much cash and it isn't dirty money either...but the law must have more proof than not liking your cover story
The driver's story didn't add up, Engel said, so he did a little more investigating. In the end, $69,040 in cash was taken from the car. Officials suspect the money is connected to a drug-trafficking operation, he said.
The driver was not arrested — or even ticketed for going 10 mph over the 75 mph speed limit. (He was warned.) But the investigation is ongoing, Engel said. The Nebraska State Patrol and the Drug Enforcement Agency are assisting in the investigation. "
They didn't charge the driver with anything...but took his cash. Not cool.
If you apply this to any other circumstance it's really kinda scary. Let's say you're sitting on the porch of your mother's house right after her funeral you've come into town to attend. Cops come up and say who are you, you can't loiter here. Tell us what you're doing here. You tell them, but they don't believe you. You can't prove to their satisfaction that you have a right to be there. So they haul you off and start trampling thru your mom's house looking for drugs, smashing and breaking stuff in the process....oh and removing stuff for "evidence". You'd be pretty mad huh. And there wouldn't be a damn thing you could do about it.
Cops have gotten a pass on a lot of things in the name of the drug war. Makes you wonder where and when it will stop. Innocent people getting killed? Nope. Innocent people losing their property? Nope. Innocent people getting their property damaged? Nope. Innocent people going to jail? Nope.
The neverending drug war...Sigh.
