Subsequent reports indicate that the powerful in the area have it out for his brother, who is also a journalist...and has run afoul of the authorites in the past. I guess they'll get back at the brother by killing him?
Various groups are appealing for leniency to president Karzai...how successful that will be in a country essentially ruled by various tribal factions I don't know.
