Philippines Senator Escudero Gets An Annulment

Francis Escudero

Well, isn't this special! Religious hypocrisy is not just in American politics, meet Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero III from the Philippines. The Philippines is a strong Catholic nation and Divorce is not legal in this country. Senator Escudero stands firm on that belief and so, after 13 years of marriage and 2 kids later, Escudero had his marriage - annulled.

“What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder.”

At least, not by divorce as far as Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero III is concerned. Even after his marriage to Christine Elizabeth Flores was annulled, Escudero is still against legalizing divorce in the Philippines.
Escudero said that annulment and legal separation provides enough options for couples who wish to end their marriage.
“I’d rather the present laws on annulment be more accessible and affordable,” the senator told reporters on Thursday.
Based on the 2000 Census of Population and Housing, of the 57.1 million Filipinos aged ten years and over, one percent or 558,023 were either divorced or separated.
Escudero confirmed his annulment in a television talk show on Monday. He, however, refused to talk further about his relationship with Flores.

No divorce bill is currently pending at the Senate. The House version of the measure is still at the committee level, but the House leadership expressed intention to prioritize it.

The Philippines, whose population is predominantly Roman Catholic, is the only country in the world that has not legalized divorce. Link

So No Divorce for the citizens of the Philippines.
But to be a good Catholic, don't call it a divorce but an annulment. God hates Divorce but gives a thumbs up on Annulments. Try to wrap your head around that!

And of course, in order to get an annulment, it will be quite costly. So the rich and powerful can obtain an annulment easily leaving the poor, the disenfranchised and the non-Catholics of the Philippines to be forced to stay with their chosen spouse.

Here is a good example of the insanity when politics is wrapped around religion (aka. theocracy). And how only the elite and powerful gets to twist these theocratic laws to benefit themselves but not to the citizens of the state.

Hmmmm, this may not be the US but certainly Escudero's politics are aligned with our teaparty Republican politicians!
