Another historic moment for Black History month. U.S. speedskater Shani Davis blades to victory and earns a gold medal in the 2010 Winter Olympics.
All Shani Davis was thinking about was gold.
With a furious kick on the final lap Wednesday, Davis stuck his skate across the line and won his second straight Olympic title in 1,000-meter speedskating, the first skater to win this event twice at the Winter Games...
When he won this race four years ago, Davis became the first African-American athlete to win an individual gold at the Winter Games. This time, he simply wanted to be known for his skating.
"When you're a world champion or an Olympic champion, you get this little thing on your back called a target," Davis said. "To go out there and win the 1,000 meters twice is truly amazing."
I love it! He is at the top of his sport, and his second win in this event will recieve a permanent mention in the records books. I wonder if Martin and Malcolm ever thought that in the course of what should have been their natural lifetimes, there would be a black man in the White House and a black man making history on the ice as a speed skater. A speed skater! Ha! I guess that can do away with another one of those old jokes, that black folks don't like the cold.
