Add this to the growing list of things you watch out for in your daily travels. Scammers have a new way of stealing your card info at the ATM. Card skimmers that copy your card information as you swipe. This method is the hardest to detect because your transaction proceeds normally - no red flag there, and the device is crafted to be nearly indistinguishable from the real thing.
You really need to pay attention and try to either only use ATM's inside the bank, or get cash the old-fashioned way, from a teller.
Before the consensus was that these skimmers where only found on independant ATM's, the one's commonly placed in convenience stores. But recently there have been many incidents of these skimmers being used at major bank branches.
Keep a close eye on your bank statements for any unusal charges no matter how small, as this is another common way for scammers to escape detection. The scammers will charge really small amounts to many many accounts...those $2 charges across thousands of accounts then add up to alot of money for the theives. These are hard economic times, and so as most of our incomes go down, the incidents of stealing and scamming go up.
