"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us," long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means told a handful of reporters and a delegation from the Bolivian embassy, gathered in a church in a run-down neighborhood of Washington for a news conference."
They maintain that the Unites States government has violated the terms of the 33 treaties, and have devasted their community. As such they wish to cede from the union and start their own independent nation.
"The new country would issue its own passports and driving licences, and living there would be tax-free -- provided residents renounce their US citizenship, Means said."They have been going about seeking support for their independence from nations that are ...well, not entirely friendly to the U.S.
"Headed by leaders of the American Indian Movement, including activist, actor and Porcupine resident Russell Means, the group dropped in on the State Department and the embassies of Bolivia, Venezuela, Chile and South Africa this week seeking recognition for their effort to form a free and independent Lakota nation. The group plans to visit more embassies in the coming months."Many would seek to ignore this as Native Americans are pretty much ignored most of the time, but that would not be smart. Their list of nations that they are visiting would probably love to have a little tempest brewing within the U.S. And this dust up only adds to the slow deterioration of the nation as a whole.
Other countries hate the U.S., now there is a chance for a country within the U.S. that hates the U.S. I wonder how the next president is going to clean up this mess.
On a lighter note, the Lakota Nation promises not taxes. Hmm. I wonder what the immigration requirements will be?
