Bernard Madoff Gets 150 Years

71 year old Bernard Madoff will get a whopping 150 Years in a federal prison - no parole! That is slightly more than the 12 years Madoff's lawyer had suggested.

NEW YORK – A federal judge rejected Bernard Madoff's plea for leniency Monday, sentencing the 71-year-old swindler to spend the rest of his life in prison for an "extraordinarily evil" fraud that took a staggering toll on thousands of victims.

U.S. District Judge Denny Chin cited the unprecedented nature of the multibillion-dollar fraud as he sentenced Madoff to the maximum of 150 years in prison, a term comparable only to those given in the past to terrorists, traitors and the most violent criminals. There is no parole in federal prison so Madoff will most likely die there.

"Here, the message must be sent that Mr. Madoff's crimes were extraordinarily evil and that this kind of irresponsible manipulation of the system is not merely a bloodless financial crime that takes place just on paper, but it is instead ... one that takes a staggering human toll," Chin said.

The massive Ponzi scheme run by Madoff since at least the early 1990s demolished the life savings of thousands of people, wrecked charities and shook confidence in the U.S. financial system.

The actual loss so far has been put at $13.2 billion. But the judge said that was a conservative estimate and noted that even Madoff told his sons in December it was a $50 billion fraud.

The sentence reflected a growing tendency over the last decade to give white-collar criminals lengthy prison terms — although a handful of cases have received even longer terms. The outcome prompted scattered applause and whoops from a group of burned former clients in a packed Manhattan courtroom.

The judge noted that not one of the more than 100 letters he received supported Madoff or described any good deeds he had done.

"The absence of such support is telling," Chin said. Link

Unreal! All the victims of Madoff's greed have been sentenced to the loss of their life savings. They have to start over and rebuild. But several victims are even older than Madoff - what are these seniors going to do? Madoff is 71yo. He lived a full, rich life - literally! But destroyed the lives of his investors to ruins.

Madoff pleaded guilty in March to securities fraud and other charges, saying he was “deeply sorry and ashamed.” In court, he faced his victims and said,

""I have left a legacy of shame, as some of my victims have pointed out, to my family and my grandchildren. This is something I will live in for the rest of my life. I'm sorry. He added, "I know that doesn't help you," after his victims recommended to the judge that he rot in jail."

Like all criminals, he is sorry for his crimes - after getting caught!
He should rot in jail!
Sometimes I wish he can be placed in a labor camp - to begin working back the money he stole - at 5cents per hour!

If you're interested to know, his inmate number is #61727-054 to begin his first day of the rest of his Life!

Although justice has been served in a technical sense, there is no punishment as harsh as that which should be handed down in light of Mr. Madoff\'s actions. I sincerely hope that this will give his victims some sort of closure and comfort, although for most the punishment will still not be enough.
