Lousy Realtor?  You get what you pay for!!

In order for the real estate profession to be considered a true profession it must charge for its services upfront.

In this time of housing deflation and upside down mortgages one group of people who suffer as much as anybody are the real estate agents. Hardly any mention is given to this group of people which is indicative as to how unappreciated they are from the get go.

Miles of print are spewed daily on the woes of the consumer and the home builder but what about the Realtor who has carried the ball for both parties? Not a word.

Take the typical buyer, who has been working with a realtor for six months and then decides not to buy any house at all. A thousand uncompensated working hours of the agent’s time is thrown away and not a penny earned for all of their efforts. Six months of listening to your neurotic needs and fears and no pay off. There is not another more thankless job than being a Realtor. Try going to your favorite restaurant for six months and never tipping and see how well that works out for you.

I’ve heard countless stories about how lousy “the” real estate agent was. Well you get what you pay for don’t you? I propose that all real estate agents working with buyers insist on a retainer of $1000 for 90 days. Look at all the houses you want and if you buy you get your money back. No purchase then the agent keeps the retainer. Imagine how many unproductive man hours not wasted on frivolous home lookers without a life of their own.

This policy would also eliminate the part time agent who thinks it FUN to show houses and is clueless as to the profession. If you’re paying a retainer you do not want a part timer. It would eliminate 90% of the horror stories which is typical when working with a part timer who does if for fun. It’s not fun, it’s work and serious business with real consequences. In order for the real estate profession to be considered a profession it must charge for its services upfront. No other profession gives away their services without an agreed upon price.

Would you let a dentist work on your teeth for free because he thought it would be fun? Would you let a surgeon cut you open for fun?  You get what you pay for.
