Vallejo Mayor Osby Davis made an anti-Gay comment during a New York Times Interview: "They're committing sin and that sin will keep them out of Heaven". Now an uproar in this small California town and a clash between the Gay Community and the Jesus-Freak-a-Zoids!
VALLEJO, CA (KGO) -- There was a showdown Tuesday night at Vallejo City Hall. At the center of the storm was Mayor Osby Davis who made comments about gay people to the New York Times.
The tension with the gay community there has simmered for a while, but it boiled over with the mayor's comments in the paper.
About 250 people on each side engaged in a passionate debate.
When members of Vallejo's faith-based community heard about the protest against Davis, they packed the council chambers to support him. "We know how to work together with one another, but we may not agree on everything," said Pastor Terrence Nichols from the New Hope Church.
Outside, members of the gay community and their supporters chastised the mayor for his comments in a recent New York Times article.
When asked about gays, he said, "They're committing sin and that sin will keep them out of heaven."
"He's speaking in official capacity that embarrasses and disgraces this city and misleads people into thinking that's what we're all about up here. And that's not what we're about," said Sam Kurshan, a gay community supporter.
"The mayor's comments were his personal comments and I stand and applaud him for immediately apologizing for those comments," said Nichols.
Eventually, the two sides came face to face.
"The civil rights movement protects gays and everybody else!" said Kurshan in an informal debate outside City Hall.
Another man argued back "And we believe in the bible, so if you want to try and censure somebody, you go to a higher power, censure God. He made the rules that we follow today!"
Many people say the night's dueling demonstrations show the increasing tension between a growing gay community and the conservative Christian community. Link
Another battle between Gays (these are men and women who wants to be true to themselves with an orientation that is NOT of their choosing) and the Religious Zealots who still follow a 2000 year old, man-interpreted book of Do's and Don'ts (which many of the don't they selectively do not abide by).
This comment made by an elected official is crass, discriminatory and hateful.
Christians are so vile with Homosexuality!
The Bible talks 50 times more against Adultery than about Homosexuality - and yet when a Christian brother commits adultery - he is quickly forgiven by the church and never told they are condemned to life in the eternal blaze of fire. But because homosexuality and its man-made interpretation is mentioned only 6 times in the Bible - the fury of God is expressed among his religious followers and condemnation is afoot!
These silly Christians continue to support this Mayor and said that this is just his "personal comment" made during an interview. However, this wasn't a casual comment made during a private moment with coworkers or during a game of golf, Davis was interviewed by the New York Times to obtain information on his political and social platform about the community he is the Mayor of.
If his reference were made against the Jews, Women, the handicap, liberals, atheists - you would see similar backlash.
Christians are hypocrites to defend these hateful comments!
Remember way back when, Christians were also there to support the Governor, Mayor, Sheriff's pursuit for racial segregation and to illegalized interracial marriage during the civil rights era of the South. The Christian Church there actively prayed for the racial divide that was held strong by the Confederacy! It was "popular" back then to be racially divisive (of course not popular today).
History have taught us that Christians are NOT the moral fiber and thinkers of any generation. They just adapt to the changing times and apply their scriptures accordingly to what is popular and accepted.
If these are the people who defines Christianity - I don't want to go to Heaven!
