In our new age of technology, a new disease have emerged! It is called TTT - Texting Teen Tendonitis! Our kids are texting until it hurts! I'm hearing teens can receive up to 500 text messages per day (or more). I'm lucky to receive one text per week. Link
13 year old Bailey Baker was complaining about pain in her back and neck, to go along with numbness in her thumb. Dr. Jane Sadler at Baylor Medical Center in Garland Texas had the diagnosis-Texting teen tendonitis, or TTT for short. Apparently, Ms. Baker had sent out 8,000 text messages in June, much more than the 25 per day her mother thought she was doing. The constant thumb movement on her Samsung device led to Bailey's numb thumb, and her posture while texting led to the neck and back pains. The Doctor ordered the teenager to strengthen her thumbs by exercising them and says she expects a surge in thumb joint replacement over the next several decades. Link
Gosh - the Baby boomers and Baby Buster generation are beside themselves with this new disease. I'm part of Generation X and I grew up with video game-itis. I remember breaking a joystick on my Atari console, but never develop a inflammatory disease (the worst I ever got was a callouse on my middle finger).
With the age of computers, many of us have develop hand and wrist pain due to computer and mouse overuse. So I guess we can relate to our teens. We also develop neck, back and shoulder cramps - but these can be corrected with proper ergonomic changes in how we work.
Well - the next new technology will be some hands-free voice-activated texting. Overuse may cause teenage laryngitis (but that may not be a bad thing)!
