| The Colbert Coalition's Anti-Gay Marriage Ad | ||||
|
||||
Last night Stephen Colbert proclaimed his utter hatred for gay marriage and aired his own ad to support for NOM (the National Organization for Marriage). NOM released a Web ad last week that portrays a "gay storm" coming to wipe out Christian values. As Colbert said, "It is like watching the 700 Club and the Weather Channel at the same time."
As a result of the recent wins for gay marriage in Vermont and Iowa, Stephen got riled up, but it wasn't til Governor David Paterson introduced gay marriage legislation here in Stephen's home state of New York that he took action. He made his own gay marriage storm ad because as Stephen says, "New York can't handle a flood of gay marriage. As it is it's impossible to get a wedding announcement in the 'Times.' I had to release Carbon Monoxide into an apartment building then work the wedding into the police interview." Link
In order to understand how ridiculous and hateful the NOM's ad is - Stephen Colbert has to lampoon this organization. Did a good job at it too!
The NOM ad cost a whopping $1.5 million dollar, released on April 8th and certainly received more controversy than "wow, they speak the truth" responses.
Yes it is such a bigotted ad. In addition, NOM employed actors to be the face of their message rather than real supporters.
It reminded me of what I learned from our grade school American history books about pre-civil rights campaign against inter-racial marriage.
Many similarities.
If today, every American can look back at our country's stance on interracial marriage and acknowledge how primitive and hateful that era was, we should be able to predict how stupid and panic-driven today's anti-gay marriage campaign is decades from now.
When you watch their ad - did you notice some subtle but highly gay connotations?
It begs to question whether the creator of this ad is even-closeted? The ad had a closing remark using the term "rainbow coalition":
A rainbow coalition of people of every creed and color are coming together in love to protect marriage.The 2 Million for Marriage was shortened to 2M4M - if you frequent the chat rooms, you can probably know what this stands for.
Pffft!NOM Launches Nationwide "Two Million for Marriage" Initiative! APRIL 8, 2009 -- In just a few minutes, NOM President Maggie Gallagher and I will hold a press conference in Trenton, NJ, announcing an ambitious new nationwide "2 Million for Marriage" (2M4M) initiative.
Anywho ...
I went on the NOM site, they have a blog section. As I read through some of their comments, many of their supporters disclosed their religious affiliation. Catholics, protestant, LDS, etc.
Are their any atheist or agnostics out there that opposes homosexuality?
This is why I have a major sour taste against the Religious Right. These God-fearing, Bible-thumping, do as I say not as I do hypocritical fanatics would preach "love thy neighbor" and turn around to hate anyone who is gay - even in their own family.
Dear Lord - Protect America from your followers!
