The Amish people of Lancaster, PA have the "fat" gene.
Scientists believe about 30 percent of white people of European ancestry have this variant, including the Amish, and that may partly explain why so many people are overweight.Link
Well, I've lived in Lancaster County for 5 years and have met the community of Amish people - never have I seen one who is obese. The Amish lives a "Little House on the Praire" lifestyle. No modern conveniences. No cars, no appliances, no electricity.
The men are hands-on farmers and carpenters. The women are homemakers and gardeners. They labor and toil.
In a nutshell, they are physically active everyday.
The study states that anyone with this genetic variant can overcome obesity simply by giving 3 to 4 hours of moderate activity everyday.
"These findings emphasize the important role of physical activity in public health efforts to combat obesity, particularly in genetically susceptible people," the authors wrote in Monday's Archives of Internal Medicine. So - this is your answer. Nothing surprising!
Being obese is tragic and I can sympathize.
But being lazy and demand that the government legitimize your laziness by giving you protection and benefits is completely unthinkable.
