Is Mr. Right White? Black Women & White Men

E-mail Print
Now don't get all defensive on me but there is a change in the landscape. Black women have lamented for decades about the shortage of "good black men". Apparently more and more women are expanding their opportunities by shopping outside of their race ...

The Wisdom of Warren Buffett

The Wisdom and Humility of Warren Buffett!
There was a one hour interview on CNBC with Warren Buffet, the second richest man who has donated $31 billion to charity. Here are some very interesting aspects of his life:

The Tattoo Fad - too much??!

E-mail Print

I don't know about you - but I personally think he is just TOO MUCH! He could be someone's grandfather.
What compels him to do this? What is the glamour that lures someone to go to this extreme?
Or if he did this to himself as a youth - what is it that drives him to keep this look forever?

In today's society to "beat the Jones" and be successful, I seriously doubt this guy can climb up the Corporate Ladder - Hell, I can't see him climbing up a Step Stool of Middle Management.
Well, I digress, maybe big business is not for him (or he is already weathly through inheritance) - but I find it very difficult to take him seriously on any topic except on "how to lose face in public".

It is no surprise that tattoos are a Fad with the Baby Boomers and the Generation X. It is still popular today.
But along with tattoos, piercings seems to be growing with the Baby Buster group and todays youths.
Is it a Trendy shout of individuality? A personal expression of oneself? To be rebellious or personal empowerment?

A small or reasonable tattoo on the arm, buttocks, leg or where-ever it can be concealed seems perfectly fine - but when you target the face ... I just don't get it.

Household tips that make your life easier

Peel a banana from the bottom and you won't have to pick the little "stringy things" off of it. That's how the primates do it. I tried this and it works.

Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.

Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer and not mold!

Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating. Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking.

Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.

To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add a couple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in and then beat them up.

For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Melt Andes mints in double broiler and pour over warm brownies. Let set for a wonderful minty frosting.

Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste of garlic and at the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic.

Leftover snickers bars from Halloween make a delicious dessert. Simple chop them up with the food chopper. Peel, core and slice a few apples. Place them in a baking dish and sprinkle the chopped candy bars over the apples.  Bake at 350 for 15 minutes!!! Serve alone or with vanilla ice cream.  Yum.

Homelessness in the City

E-mail Print

Homelessness exist in practically every major city. Its a sad state of affair to watch a human being fall to this level of existence now having to be dependent on strangers and the city system for his own daily survival.
The causes for homeless men and women can be due to many factors: poverty, housing crisis, eroding work opportunities, decline in public assistance, lack of affordable health care, mental illness, addiction, etc.
The list can be endless.

While in DC - I watched a homeless man panhandle for money. When a passerby ignores him, the homeless got upset and start demanding for respect. As I watch him conjure a debate on his lack of esteem from strangers, its just becomes another one of those walking contradictions. The sense of entitlement - the feeling that you (the prosperous and affluent) must provide for him (the proverish). How he ended up homeless is not anyones concern. How he needs to get out of being homeless apparently now becomes civic responsibility.

Right Brain vs Left Brain Test

The Right Brain vs Left Brain test ...
do you see the dancer turning clockwise or anti-clockwise?

If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa.
Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it.

The illusion is amazing but I don't buy the right brain vs left brain load of crap.
Sometimes I see her spinning one way, sometimes the other - though she is completely asymmetric.
Sometimes I can't control which way I see it, it just switches.
the one way I do is to not look directly at the image -
use your peripheral vision and see if you can switch it the other way.

Origins of Common Expressions

E-mail Print
Here's a short history lesson of the origins of our common expressions (ie. Idioms) we use today.
A friend forwarded this to me (via email) - I don't have the source nor can I confirm the validity of the content - however it is a nice read.
In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are "limbs," therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the _expression, "Okay, but it'll cost youan arm and a leg."
As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only twice a year (May and October)! Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool. They couldn't wash the wigs, so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. The heat would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term "big wig." Today we often use the term "here comes the Big Wig" because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy.
