| David - a short story - Part 1 |
|
David - It was a chilly day by Miami standards as David drove down Collins Ave in his 1978 root beer brown Honda Civic. He loved that car. With 178,000 miles, it still started up on the very first turn. It was not just a car to him but an old friend who shared memories and somehow provided him with a sense of security. They had traveled many long roads together and made a few narrow escapes as well. Today he needed a friend; the BMW would sit in the carport. Ironic that he considered the BMW less precious. He watched the old people sitting on the terraces of the deco hotels as he drove by. Thousands of them “the white hairs” lined up in rows after rows just sitting there. It was the same for miles not just on Collins Ave but also for all of Miami Beach. He never got use to it, seeing all these old folks lined up just waiting for death. Yet,there they were on this lazy sunny day, floating memories like clouds and waiting for heaven’s bus. How long would this last sanctuary be available to them he thought, knowing that South Beach was on the verge of being discovered. With any luck, they would pass on before being moved on, and moved out. (continued after the jump) David was on his way to the cruise port off Biscayne Blvd to sign for a shipment of pottery that he had sent to himself while in Spain. He chose ocean freight as he was in no hurry to receive it and it was dirt-cheap. He had this sense of foreboding when he woke up this morning and chose the Honda to keep him company.
He got these intuitions sometimes but today it was a foreboding. Today he had a sense of dread against an unknown. It was not paranoia, but a mild fear that something was afoot and he did not know what. Kind of like waiting for blood test results or the pre dentist jitters. Whatever it was it was weighing on him. He signed for the shipment; the three crates would be delivered to his home tomorrow. David was furnishing a home for a wealthy Argentinean and knew some of these pieces would be perfect. Heavy Spanish pottery and tiles in topaz blue and earthy yellows tones, items that would look great in any home, especially the Spanish style home in Coconut Grove....
